Now generally, as I have many projects on the go, my painting evolves in either quality and/or style between units so that you can tell which units I first painted and which are the most recently painted. This is even more compounded with the fact that since I last painted Ogres, a new paint range came out. Bugger. So, I have two Ironguts on my desk which I have recently completed, investigating how to paint the ogres with the new paint range. (Pictures will follow soon), and I think they came out quite well.
This time, I decided to write down instructions for painting the two main components which link the Ogres into a cohesive force letting me paint the other details however strikes my fancy at the time so each Ogre is unique to some degree. The Skin, and the Rusty metal effect are these two factors I take the most care on as you can imagine. So... I will share how I did it, and pictures to follow when I paint the rest of the Ironguts; Here goes.
Rust
1.) Base the metal surfaces in Rhinox hide, a nice rich dark brown.2.) Cover the whole thing in a generous wash of Agrax Earthshade
3.) A nice heavy drybrush of Mournfang Brown
4.) Now comes the fun, Stippling. Stipple the metal surfaces with Skrag Brown
5.) And again with Fire Dragon Bright,
6.) And once more with Ironbreaker,
7.) You can now pick out details with the Ironbreaker and add Artistic scratches, and/or Reassert any shading by finelining with the Agrax Earthshade
Skin
1.) Base the skin areas with a coat of Steel Legion Drab
2.) Now time for a layer of Baneblade Brown, leaving the cracks in the musculature darker but covering most.
3.) Next up is another layer, this one covering less than the last, this time with a 50/50 mix of Baneblade Brown and Karak Stone.
4.) Now another highlight layer... this time straight Karak Stone
5.) and a final fine highlight with a Mixture of Karak Stone and Ushabti bone
6.) Now if you want your Ogres to have Scars... Paint them on with either Ushabti Bone or Screaming Skull.
Hope this helps, Next time I will be talking dwarves as I have a game of the Hobbit Strategy Battle game on Thursday and I need to get my Dorfs done.
